About the work / Intent
My approach to painting is deeply intuitive and emotive, focusing on the subconscious connection between myself, the landscape, and the viewer. By allowing my paintings to emerge spontaneously, without preconceived notions or calculations, I create a space for raw expression and emotional resonance.
My use of nature and the landscape is a language to convey my experience of being profoundly moved by the world around us. Through my art, I seek to channel those ineffable moments and emotions that defy easy description, offering viewers a chance to tap into their own memories, experiences, and emotions.
The process of making marks, erasing them, and leaving behind traces of experimentation adds layers of complexity and depth to my work, inviting viewers to explore different entry points and engage with the interplay of texture, colour, and form.

About the work / Inspiration

The gift that keeps giving......
We are surrounded by inspiration daily. To slow down life is a joy and gateway to finding more inspiration.
When I moved from the big city to beachside Papamoa. I found a world of inspirations in the land, sea, and natures gifts delivered daily.
Walking the beach finding gems, or watching the patterns appear, only to disappear in a second. The forms, colours, and textures are constantly being imbedded in my brain.
Glimpses of trees or roadside scapes on travels here or there, are collected and when the time is right uncovered again in my work.
I paint intuitively with music and without. The vibrations of music guide me to be active with my marks, or slow and meditative. These inspirations around me whether large or small come through me onto canvas in that moment. I'm creating a visual scape that may serve as a reminder to the viewer, of a place or time once cherised.
I don't paint places, I paint a sense of a place, a feeling. A memory, an imaginery world. Using the beauty of nature as my muse.

About the work / In the studio
I love to explore new materials, and play with them as much as possible.
I love mixing colours, to see how one colour can push or dominate another. I spend a lot of time mixing colours and often discarding them in order to build my understanding of the alchemy of colour.
When I'm in the studio, Im always working on paper and canvas. These are two of my favourites. Most of my work these days is started in acrylic as it serves or pushes me to be quick and non commital to the marks. Challenging my brain away from preciousness. Just making marks and not worrying about end results.
My paper works can sometimes be radically different to the canvas pieces, but they most definately inform the larger canvas works. I'm always searching for a loose and open active brushstroke. Layered and exciting.
Working in collage is also a great vehicle to changing perspective. Cutting and changing shapes to sit balanced or unbalanced in a composition. Contrasting texture or activeness against a quiet serene area. Again these collages inspire how I approach and play with areas in my paintings.
